Converting Your Twitter Tweets Into Cash. Right Or Wrong?

November 20th, 2008

I came across be-a-magpie.com this week and wasn’t sure what to think. The website is essentially an ad network for Twitter. I’m all for adding advertising to my blog and trying to make a few bucks where I can on the web. However, I’m unsure if having ads appear in your Twitter feed is taking it to far? What do you think?

If you have a Twitter account, you can sign up for a free be-a-magpie.com account. Once your account is created, you enter your Twitter username and set the frequency you want the ads to appear in your feed. anywhere from a ratio of 1:1 to 1:20. The be-a-magpie team also promises that they will do their best to ensure that the ads that are posted are in-line with the tone of your tweets. I think this is a good idea but a little unsure on if it can be implemented in reality. For example, even with Google AdSense, I occasionally get an unrelated ad appearing in my banner(s).

The other side of the coin is, you can sign-up as an advertiser with be-a-magpie. Right now they are offering a first campaign from 10 Euros. It looks like you submit a small tagline (tweet), provide some keywords, and your ad placement is based on that. Might be a worth while ad experiment that doesn’t have a huge price tag. I’m would be curious to see how many Twitter users are allowing ads to appear on their feeds – therefore, revealing the size of the ad network the advertiser has access to.

Anyhow, this is an interesting concept. I’m just a little unsure about how I feel about ads in my feed. Is anyone out there currently using this within their feed? What are your thoughts?

After seeing that people with 800-900 followers have the potential of making 1000 euros a month … I am VERY interested. However, I do not know how to get that many followers (in a dignified manner).

I have some ideas for different twitter accounts (music reviews, etc.). http://twitter.com/twitrock is one of them that I currently run, and just started back up again – I am thinking I could post 4-5 tweets a day and have it do 1 ad per 5 tweets and start making money – but it needs followers to do any good.

I really want to get something off the ground. Not sure how. Maybe we should all group up and follow each other, etc. and we could get something started. Who knows.

Yes, generating a following is the challenge. Also, do you run the risk of losing your following if you start placing ads in your feed?

Yes, it can be a risky thing, we dont really know the reaction of our current followers. Maybe some will ignore the messages and continue following you and maybe other will simply stop following you :(

Yes, I decided not to implement it. At this point, I’m more concerned about generating a following – not monetizing it.
